Slide 2 -- History: 2 purposes for slide
#1 – History: Early bicycle-like devices ~2 centuries old. Running machines, Velocipede (fast feet), boneshaker. No pedals, brakes, steering. Penny Farthing was a real bike -- wire spokes, pedals, weak brakes. Dangerous.
Q-Why large wheel? A-Speed. @ 100 rpm, you go only 8 mph with 27" wheels or 16 mph w/54" wheels. Bike "gears" are still described in terms of gear inches.
Safety bike had speed increase in chain drive. This and bloomers made cycling popular for women in 1890's.
#2 -- cycling golden years lasted only ~20 years, ended by auto. By 1920's almost no adults cycled. The few adult cyclists had low status. Wrong ideas developed -- bicycle is child's toy, cycling on road is dangerous (fear from the rear). No proof for these notions. Studies were finally done in '70's that refute the fear but is still widely believed.
